Smart Thermostats — Which Ones Actually Save Money (and Which Ones Break)
A smart thermostat can shave 8–15% off your annual HVAC costs — or it can add 40% by running your resistance backup heat every time it "learns." The difference is compatibility and configuration.
What is a smart thermostat?
A Wi-Fi-connected thermostat that can learn your schedule, integrate with weather forecasts, and geofence your phone to know when you're home. The best ones (Ecobee, Nest, Honeywell T-series) go further with room sensors that solve the "cold bedroom" problem.
When do smart thermostats save money?
They save money in three scenarios:
- Your schedule is inconsistent (WFH days mixed with office days). A programmable thermostat you never program is worse than no thermostat at all.
- You have multiple rooms with different comfort needs — a smart thermostat with room sensors can even out the house.
- You have a two-stage or variable-speed system whose full capability was locked behind a proper thermostat.
How do smart thermostats fail?
Two ways I've seen in Creedmoor:
- Heat-pump incompatibility. A generic smart thermostat wired to a heat pump without a heat-pump-specific setup will run backup resistance heat every time it's 2°F below setpoint. A $150 thermostat can turn into a $600 December power bill.
- No common wire (C-wire). Older 4-wire systems don't power the smart thermostat. Cheap "battery-only" installs kill batteries in weeks and can brown out the equipment. Pull a C-wire during installation — always.
Frequently asked questions
Do smart thermostats work with heat pumps?
Yes, but you need to enable heat-pump mode and set the backup-heat lockout temperature. Skip this configuration step and you'll run resistance heat unnecessarily all winter.
Which smart thermostat is best for NC homes?
For heat pumps, the Ecobee Enhanced or the Honeywell T9 (both have heat-pump-aware algorithms and room sensors). For gas furnaces, the Nest is fine.
