The single most important thing you can do for your heating and cooling system costs less than lunch: change the air filter. A clogged filter chokes airflow, drives up your power bill, and forces the blower motor to work overtime — the leading cause of premature breakdowns we see across the Triangle.
The short answer
For most homes, replace a standard 1-inch filter every 60–90 days. Have pets, allergies, or a large family? Check it monthly. Thicker 4- or 5-inch media filters can last 6–12 months. When you can no longer see light through the filter, it's overdue.
What a dirty filter costs you
Restricted airflow makes your system run longer to reach the same temperature, raising energy use by up to 15%. It can freeze your evaporator coil in summer and crack a heat exchanger in winter. A clean filter is the difference between a system that lasts 8 years and one that lasts 15.
